Tracing the Crimson Silhouette

︎︎︎Project Summary
Tracing the Crimson Silhouette is a curated compilation of illustrations inspired by traditional East Asian calligraphy, exploring the fluid intersection of art and narrative. The project takes its cue from the classical technique of "tracing the red," where tracing paper is layered over red characters, meticulously following their contours. As layers accumulate, the characters become increasingly distorted, offering a powerful metaphor for the evolving nature of storytelling.
Each semi-transparent page in the compilation overlays another, allowing glimpses of underlying forms to emerge, shifting in meaning as they are turned and layered. This interplay of visibility and obscurity mirrors the way stories are passed down through generations, gradually reshaped by personal biases and cultural shifts.
At its core, the project examines how reinterpretation transforms collective memory. The narrative of Confucianism, deeply ingrained in the East Asian culture, serves as a compelling parallel. Originally a set of teachings on education and ethics, Confucian ideals have been continuously redefined over centuries, integrating with diverse ideologies and adapting to sociopolitical changes. In recent years, Confucianism has been revitalized to reinforce national identity, reflecting how tradition evolves in response to contemporary needs.
Just as each layer in the calligraphic tracing subtly alters the original character, the reinterpretation of Confucianism across generations reshapes its meaning and influence. Tracing the Crimson Silhouette captures this perpetual transformation, offering a nuanced reflection on the fluidity of cultural heritage and identity.

︎︎︎Conceal, Reinforce, Alter
In crafting these illustrations, I explored the intricate interplay between layers, distilling their relationships into three distinct dynamics: Concealment, Reinforcement, and Transformation.
Concealment veils the meaning beneath, shrouding it in mystery. Reinforcement echoes the art of tracing, where each layer amplifies and elevates the essence of the original. Transformation, however, is where true evolution occurs—subtly reshaping the form, redefining its meaning, and inviting fresh interpretations. Layers intertwine in nuanced ways, preserving core narratives while weaving in unexpected complexities.
